Heiko Maas, German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs since March 2018, talked about current challenges in the transatlantic relations addressing trade conflicts, the role of NATO, and the US-European strategic partnership on the grounds of shared values.

Heiko Maas has been the German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs since March 2018. Prior to this position, he served as Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection from 2013 to 2018 and Deputy State Prime Minister and Minister of Economics, Labor, Energy, and Transportation of the German State of Saarland from 2012 to 2013. He served as the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Saar from 2000 to 2018 and the Chairman of the SPD Parliamentary Group in the German State of Saarland from 1999 to 2012. From 1996 to 1998, he served as State Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Transportation in the German State of Saarland, later becoming the Minister from 1998 to 1999. He served as a member of the Saarland Landtag from 1994 to 1996 and 1999 to 2013. He holds a degree in law from the University of Saarland.
